Sasha in GENERAL HOSPITAL had a tough life in Port Charles, but she clearly survived! actress Sofia Mattson made her daytime debut in the role in September 2018. However, Sasha Gilmore is a completely different character from Sasha Donev, played by Sandra Hess in 2008. Donev was the lawyer for Russian crime boss Andre Karpov who had Jake Spencer kidnapped and was shot dead by a sniper. Totally different person! In February 2022, the actress needed some time off, so her sister Helena Mattsson filled in for a few episodes.
Sasha Gilmore first appeared when Curtis Ashford met with the young lady to tell her he thought she might be his friend Nina Reeves’ daughter, who was taken from her and put up for adoption. Sasha argued that she was not adopted and had heard the story of her birth during a blizzard many times throughout her life. She reluctantly agreed to a DNA test and when the results came back positive, Valentin Cassadine happily shared with Nina that he had hired Curtis and they had found their long lost daughter!
The first meeting of Nina and Sasha did not go well. After making small talk, Nina was disappointed that Sasha didn’t have the other half of the heart charm her daughter was supposed to have and then got a little too carried away with wanting to spend time with her. Sasha put up walls and didn’t want another mother in her life, but Nina made her case and asked for a chance to meet her.
Despite turning down job offers from Valentin and Nina, Sasha agreed to stay in Port Charles and moved in with her new sister, Kiki Jerome. Noticing Sasha Griffin checking out Monroe, Ava stirred the pot by suggesting to her that Griffin and Kiki weren’t that serious, so she could totally attack him. This, of course, did not work out, but Sasha turned out to be even more trouble, because it turned out that Valentin paid her to lie about being Nina’s daughter! Though Sasha reluctantly bonded with Nina and urged her to reconcile with Valentin (his plan all along), the guilt — as well as Kiki’s shocking murder — inspired Sasha to leave Port Charles before she found out…or the next victim of the became a murderer!
Sasha soon returned and decided to make a life for herself in Port Charles, although Valentin remained concerned that the longer she stayed in town, the more likely her lie would be exposed. Despite this, Sasha continued to calm down and even entered into a relationship with Michael Corinthos. They were enjoying a romantic getaway in Puerto Rico, but after meeting Cassandra Pierce, Sasha became drugged and suddenly collapsed upon her return to Port Charles! She was diagnosed with a virulent strain of bird flu and was close to death before doctors could cure her. However, this encounter with death inspired Sasha to make it clear to Michael that he was not Nina’s daughter, and although he was upset, he soon forgave her. Lucy Coe also approached Sasha about offering her a job on her Deception relaunch.
Though the blame lay on her, the responsibility was lifted when Lulu overheard Sasha discuss her secret with Obrecht and expose the lie at Nina and Valentine’s wedding! Sasha tried to explain through tears, but Nina was angry. Eventually, Nina accepted Sasha’s apology and even Carly agreed to her date with Michael. With a dangerous mob war brewing in Port Charles and the Corinthos family literally coming under fire, Michael tried to push Sasha away for her own protection, but that inspired the two to confess their love for one another and they moved in together instead. Though their relationship ran into a minor snag when Sasha urged him to marry Willow Tait to keep Nelle custody of Wiley away!
When Michael hesitated, Sasha plotted with Willow’s friend Harrison Chase to make it look like they were having an affair to get Michael and Willow together. Although the plan worked and they got custody of Wiley, it worked a little too well and Michael and Willow started to fall in love! Sasha turned to drugs to keep her spirits up while pursuing her modeling career and it nearly destroyed her. Things also got ugly when Michael and Willow discovered the lies they had been told.
Sasha was able to get the help she needed and tried to get her life back on track hoping to reconnect with Michael but ended up having a one night stand with Brando Corbin which got her pregnant ! When Cyrus Renault – who had become disturbingly close to Sasha while feeding her drugs – found out he was furious and she lied that it was an unnamed connection to protect Brando. Eventually, Cyrus was arrested, but Sasha and Brando still couldn’t relax and get to know each other better while waiting for their child because his mother, Gladys Corbin (who spilled the beans to Cyrus before!) decided to stay in Port Charles and keep meddling!
Concerned about Brando’s ties to the Corinthos family and the mob, Sasha agreed to step out of the family’s “business” to protect their baby. She also helped get Gladys a job at Brook Lynn, but it didn’t help keep the woman out of her hair! Sasha panicked going into labor while locked in the back room of the Jerome Gallery with Gladys, but Brando got her out and to the hospital where things took a turn for the worse!
After an emergency C-section, Sasha and Brando were heartbroken when their little boy was transferred to the NICU after being deprived of oxygen for too long. They chose Liam Michael as their son’s name and asked Willow and Michael to be his godparents. Tragically, Liam had no brain activity, and Sasha and Brando had to say goodbye to their little boy when they took him off life support. Brando was supportive of Sasha as they both mourned their loss but worried when she insisted on returning to work so soon.
Everyone was worried that Sasha was throwing herself into work as a distraction, and Brando took her on a trip to Niagara Falls to spend some alone time together. After meeting an old acquaintance who offered her drugs, Sasha decided to take on her and secretly took pills while on vacation. She then became obsessed with the idea of getting married and eventually persuaded Brando to elope, so when they returned to Port Charles it was as husband and wife! But getting back to her normal life continued to be a problem and Sasha kept struggling.
After a photographer took pictures of Sasha using drugs, Gladys helped her out and stole the memory card from his camera. But while chasing the photographer in her car, Sasha accidentally hit Harmony Miller, who was taken to the hospital but died. This sent Sasha into another spiral, and Gladys deleted the incriminating photos while promising not to tell Brando. But secrets will come out!
